The original bridge on this site was built in 1874, designed by Jacob Wrey Mould — the same architect behind the intricate carvings of Bethesda Fountain — and constructed of wood and cast iron. Like many of Central Park's early cast iron bridges, it deteriorated over the decades and was eventually replaced.
